What are Hexagrams? The I Ching, a classic Chinese text, comprises 64 hexagrams. Each hexagram is a geometric figure formed by six stacked horizontal lines, each of which can be either Yang or Yin. Traditionally, the lines are counted from the bottom up, with the lowest line designated as line one and the top line as line six. What are Trigrams?Trigrams are traditional East Asian symbols, each composed of three straight lines, either solid or broken in the center. In Chinese, they are known as pa kua. These symbols held significant prominence in Chinese religion, philosophy, and proto-science for over two millennia. Taoist priests, sages, and scholars extensively utilized trigrams in astrology, geomancy, and various forms of divination. They also found applications in medicine and alchemy, serving as motifs for artists and artisans in diverse media. Furthermore, when paired, trigrams constitute the hexagrams that form the foundation of divination in the I Ching. |
