What is the Chinese Zodiac?

One significant aspect of Chinese culture is the Chinese zodiac, a 12-year astrological cycle that assigns a zodiac animal to each year of an ever-repeating rotation.

With the passing of each Chinese New Year, the zodiac animal for the given year advances to the next in the 12-year sequence.

The Chinese zodiac comprises twelve animals that first appeared during the Zhan Guo period (5th century B.C.). Although the precise date of their creation remains unknown, they were officially recognized during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–9 A.D.), spanning over 2,000 years.
